Hitler must be smiling
When I was in jr. high in the late 1960's I would usually not say the pledge of allegiance with most of the rest of the assembly. It’s not that I don’t love the ideology of the pledge, but I could not (with a clear conscience) pledge allegiance to a country who was sending our troops to Vietnam to die when I was saying “PEACE” a lot and just starting to smoke pot, as well as hanging around others who felt the same as I.
Of course I also don’t believe in taking over a neighboring (or other) country by force for whatever reason. South Vietnam needed help, and I would have supported sending money and/or arms, and training THEM to fight their own war. I think even if they were outnumbered they would have prevailed given the right weaponry, BUT I DID NOT SUPPORT SENDING TROOPS TO SACRIFICE THEIR LIVES FOR A FOREIGN COUNTRY!
My notebook at school said, in big bold letters written as neatly as I could (filling up the front cover) PEACE NOW OR NOTHING LATER.
I remember Mr. Miller (one of the leaders, maybe vice principle) giving me some shit about it, but I would not cover it up, replace it or anything else. I had read this saying in some book or other, and I remember a student that I liked (a girl!) Gave me accolades for displaying it so proudly.
I remember reading one book which was very moving called “JOHNNY GOT HIS GUN.” If you have seen the Metallica Video “ONE” or heard the song then you know about this book, for the song and video are based on it.
Of course that war was part of the “cold war” which pitted the left (the Commies) against the right (the Nazis.) It wasn’t as easy to tell that then, because of propaganda that our government was spouting. I remember one thing in particular that they (the U.S. govt.) said about the communists, that they would encourage the school children to “rat out” their parents if they were American sympathizers. I remember being appalled by the thought of informing the government if you thought your parents were doing something “wrong.”
Communism doesn’t work for financial reasons, not because the idea of “all for one and one for all” doesn’t work. Kind of a “live and let live” belief.
I was sucked into the ideal of the first Iraq war, since they invaded Kuwait, but now when I look back I wonder what WE were fighting for, if not for oil. Why didn’t we just arm the Kuwaiti soldiers and let them fight it out? (they didn’t need our money, they had more than they knew what to do with.) Those sons of bitches ought to still be giving us all the free oil we want, they wouldn’t even exist in their homeland if we had not helped.
But here comes W. (a.k.a. The Antichrist) Bush junior. I called him “resident bush” at the time. (He wasn’t elected, he was selected, by our Supreme Court.) [The chosen ones.] He was only elected for his second term because he kept everyone petrified of another attack by some rag-headed motherfucker with a dirty bomb, or anthrax, or a real nuclear weapon. Every time Bush’s ratings dropped, Ridge kicked the security color code up another notch, while Osama Bin Laden snickered in some cave somewhere in that God forsaken rocky, sandy, piece of shit land over there. Well, that plus the evangelical “Christians” (or the SACRILEGIOUS RIGHT as my mom calls them) were told in their churches who to vote for. They, after all, want to legislate their beliefs In order to make all of the people in the U.S. (And ultimately the world) live our lives the way they see fit. Roe v. Wade is what they want overturned, and they have to have a conservative president to appoint any Supreme Court Justices that step down (or die.) Remember Osama? Why wasn’t he “job one?” Oh sure, we kicked Afghanistan around for a while and fucked up some terrorist training camps (that should have been done after the FIRST trade center attack, [the bomb in a van in the parking garage,] or after the Lockerbie Scotland jet was downed, of after the U.S.S. Cole bombing)
But Bush had an agenda. Or perhaps it was Karl Rove, of Rummy, or Cheney. After all, Bush is so fuckin’ dumb, if someone didn’t have their arm up Bush’s ass he couldn’t talk at all. They were going to war with Iraq. Period. A country that had no nuclear capability, no way to hit the U.S. if they had a bomb,
a country that was already under our thumb with no-fly zones, no air force to speak of, no stockpiles of chemical, biological, or nuclear material. But Saddam was a thorn in the side of everyone in their region. THEIR REGION! Not ours. So we are sending out troops over their by the thousands to die in that fucking place so companies like Haliburton can get rich and contribute money (lots of it) to the Nazi Regime, er I mean the Republican Party. I guess their philosophy is “KILL THEM ALL AND LET GOD SORT IT OUT!” Ever seen “Full Metal Jacket?”

So Bin Laden is in a hidey hole somewhere, Hussein is in custody, Over one thousand arrests have been made (probably deservedly so,) and the last I heard there has been ONE conviction. Oh and I heard today that Dershowitz (yes that one) is in favor of torturing prisoners to make them talk. I can almost smell the bodies burning now. Hitler must be smiling.
